This workshop-laboratory focuses on the vocabulary of Contact Improvisation, Underscore and the practice of a movement 'score' called SOIS.

In this workshop, participants will learn how to broaden and deepen their practice of Contact Improvisation by accessing and incorporating a wide range of choices, flavors and colors in dancing with a partner as well as accessing what is available while dancing the CI in a larger ensemble improvisation.

S.O.I.S (Sound Sight Sensation) is a movement practice that begins with perceiving and responding to information from three sources: auditory, visual and kinesthetic – sound, sight and sensation. It is about responding to simultaneous and non-hierarchical fields of attention in the process of movement and dance.

This practice opens up a wide range of choices and compositional options for the dancer by drawing on an integrated and rich level of resources and responses available in each moment while dancing Contact with a partner.

This workshop/laboratory is offered at a very special and unique rate to include as many people as possible. The subject Juliet is teaching is new and is being offered for the first time here in Paris, before she continues teaching it in England in April.
In addition to receiving instructions/directions, you will have time to explore and experiment with the material.

Juliet Shelley is a dancer, choreographer. She is also an Alexander technique and Pilates teacher. Her contact improvisation teachers include Steve Paxton, Nancy Stark Smith, Kirstie Simson, Chris Aiken and Martin Keogh. She has delivered courses and workshops in the UK, France, Netherlands, Italy, USA, Malaysia, New Zealand and Australia. She began contact dance improvisation in London after graduating from the Laban Center for Movement and Dance and continuing her studies at the Center for New Dance Development in Amsterdam. In 2000 she completed a three-week intensive training with Nancy Stark Smith at Earthdance in the United States and in 2012 she was invited to the Extended Underscore working group with Nancy Stark Smith and Mike Vargas in London, a practice and in-depth seven-day study with around thirty participants.
